Cross-sectional area Clinical Environmental Medicine

The QB Clinical Environmental Medicine course is for students in their fifth clinical semester. A team of lecturers from the fields of family medicine, dermatology, hospital hygiene, occupational medicine, environmental medicine, chemistry, pediatrics, and pulmonology teach the following topics in compulsory lectures:

  • Introduction to Clinical Environmental Medicine – Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Birgitta Weltermann
  • Mold in indoor spaces: a health problem? - Prof. Steffen Engelhart
  • Indoor pollutants and allergens - Dr. med. Dipl. chem. H. Lichtnecker
  • Food intolerances - Dr. Laura Maintz, MD
  • The immune system and allergic diseases in childhood - Dr. Sabina Schmitt-Grohé, PD
  • Environment and smoking – risks and the current status of smoking cessation - PD Dr. Stefan Pabst

Clinical environmental medicine deals with research, diagnosis, therapy, and prevention of environmentally-related health risks and environmentally-associated diseases. At the same time, clinical environmental medicine is a niche subject due to its rare clinical pictures. For this reason, the QB Clinical Environmental Medicine program focuses on case-based learning, giving students the opportunity to improve their differential diagnostic thinking for everyday clinical practice.

To this end, the fundamentals of clinical reasoning are taught. Clinical reasoning deals with the cognitive process of doctors linking medical knowledge with patient data in order to gradually arrive at a well-founded diagnosis and treatment decision.
