Pre-clinical elective course “Health and Risk Communication”

Elective I for preclinical students

Why are some health risks underestimated, while others are overestimated? And how can doctors communicate risks in a clear and effective way? Health and risk communication plays a key role in everyday medical practice: successful communication can support informed decision-making, promote patient autonomy, and debunk health-related myths. In this seminar, students gain a comprehensive understanding of how medical information can be conveyed through effective communication. Knowledge and background information on scientific work are also taught to enable students to find and evaluate relevant scientific literature on the topic of health and risk communication. Through role-playing, they also learn to apply strategies and techniques of health and risk communication. In addition, ethical aspects of health and risk communication are discussed in this seminar.
