Pre-clinical elective course “Planetary Health Diet—International Elective” (in cooperation with St. Andrews)

Elective I for preclinical students in the 20256 summer semester (14-day block in September – date to follow)

The topic of nutrition offers the opportunity to teach the connections between numerous preclinical subjects such as physiology, anatomy, and clinical psychology, as well as their clinical relevance in nutritional counseling. At the same time, the topic of “planetary health” is of great and increasing relevance to students. As shown in the NKLM, these inlcude:

- Knowledge of fundamental core areas of planetary health,
- Reflection on the medical responsibility for a sustainable transformation of relevant areas of society (including nutrition) and
- Teaching skills for implementing transformation processes (e.g., sustainability in the healthcare system).

The course is offered in cooperation with the University of St. Andrews (Scotland) and is a further development of the already successfully implemented elective course “Culinary Medicine & Planetary Health Diet” for students in the preclinical stage.

The elective course is aimed at students at both locations and takes place as a block during the semester break (small group format). It comprises joint seminars with integrated cooking classes (online, supported by a teaching kitchen) and e-learning offerings, including exercises on motivational communication. In addition, two internships in nutrition training at family doctor practices and an online seminar on nutritional counseling are planned.

The language of instruction is English. The nutritional recommendations discussed are based on the Planetary Health Diet developed by experts from the EAT-Lancet Commission and our teaching methods follow established principles of Planetary Health Education. Further details and the schedule for the 2025 summer semester can be found here.

Examination: On the last day of the elective block, there will be a combined knowledge and skills exam with simulated patients for medical students at the University Hospital Bonn in person.
